How to choose the right western dress for your body type

Every woman has stood in front of a mirror wearing a dress that looked perfect on the model and wondered what went wrong. Almost always the answer is body type — not because anything is wrong with your body, but because different silhouettes work differently on different frames.

Five body types covered

Pear Wider hips
Apple Fuller midsection
Hourglass Defined waist
Rectangle Straight frame
Petite Under 5'3"

How to identify your body type

Are your hips noticeably wider than your shoulders?

Pear shape

Is your midsection the widest part of your body?

Apple shape

Are your shoulders and hips roughly equal with a defined waist?

Hourglass shape

Are your shoulders, waist, and hips roughly the same width?

Rectangle shape

Are you under 5 feet 3 inches with a smaller overall frame?

Petite frame

01 Pear body type

Wider hips and thighs, defined waist, narrower shoulders. One of the most common body types among Indian women.

Fabric tip

Flowy rayon and modal drape beautifully over fuller hips without adding volume. Lighter weaves work better than stiff fabrics.

What works

  • A-line dresses — fit at the waist and flare gradually, skimming over the hips without clinging and creating visual balance between narrower upper body and fuller lower body.
  • Fit and flare silhouettes — fitted through the bodice, flared from the waist down. They celebrate the defined waist while moving comfortably over the hips.
  • V-neck or sweetheart necklines — draw the eye upward and create the appearance of broader shoulders, balancing the wider hip line naturally.
  • Wrap style dresses — define the waist beautifully and allow the skirt to fall loosely over the hips without any pulling or tightness.

What to avoid

  • Bodycon through hips
  • Straight shift dresses
  • Wide horizontal hip patterns
02 Apple body type

Fuller through the waist and midsection. Shoulders and hips may be similar in width. Legs are typically slimmer proportionally.

Fabric tip

Medium-weight rayon and modal drape smoothly over the midsection. Avoid very thin fabrics that show every line.

What works

  • Empire waist dresses — the waistline sits just below the bust, the narrowest point of the torso, and flows loosely from there. Creates definition at the right place.
  • Wrap dresses with a defined tie — create the illusion of a waistline without being tight through the midsection. The adjustable tie lets you control how much definition you create.
  • Flowy midi dresses — the key is movement in the fabric. A dress that flows rather than sticks is both comfortable and flattering.
  • V-necklines — elongate the torso visually and draw the eye vertically, making the overall silhouette look longer and leaner.

What to avoid

  • Tight bodycon waist
  • Wide waistbands at midsection
  • Clingy fabrics
  • Boxy straight dresses
03 Hourglass body type

Roughly equal shoulder and hip measurements with a clearly defined, narrower waist. Most straightforward body type to dress.

Fabric tip

Almost any natural fabric works well. Modal and rayon drape particularly beautifully — following curves naturally without clinging uncomfortably.

What works

  • Wrap dresses — follow the natural curve of the body, define the waist with the tie, and balance the shoulder and hip line beautifully.
  • Fit and flare dresses — celebrate the hourglass shape most directly. Fitted through the bodice and waist, flared from the hips.
  • Bodycon midi dresses — when the fabric is comfortable and the length is appropriate, a fitted midi in a natural fabric can look stunning on an hourglass figure.
  • Belted dresses in any silhouette — highlighting the defined waist always helps.

What to avoid

  • Boxy straight dresses
  • Oversized silhouettes
  • Very stiff fabrics
04 Rectangle body type

Similar measurements across shoulders, waist, and hips with minimal curve definition. The goal is to create the illusion of curves and definition.

Fabric tip

Flowy fabrics like rayon create movement and softness. Tiered cotton dresses add volume beautifully. Avoid very structured, stiff fabrics.

What works

  • Tiered dresses — add volume and movement to a straight figure, creating the appearance of curves where the tiers fall. Particularly effective at the hip level.
  • Ruffled or gathered dresses — add visual interest and volume, breaking the straight line of the figure and creating shape.
  • Wrap style dresses — create a defined waistline on a frame that naturally has less waist definition. One of the most effective styling tricks for rectangle body types.
  • Patterned and printed dresses — bold prints, geometric patterns, and florals all add visual dimension to a straight figure.
  • Belted or tie-waist dresses — cinch in the middle to create an hourglass-like silhouette.

What to avoid

  • Plain straight shift dresses
  • Thin slip dresses
  • Flat, structureless styles
05 Petite frame

Under 5 feet 3 inches. Not a body shape — a frame size. Petite women can be any shape, but height creates specific considerations for how dresses look and fit.

Fabric tip

Lightweight fabrics — soft cotton, rayon, modal — work best. Heavy fabrics add bulk and weight that can overwhelm a smaller frame.

What works

  • Knee length dresses — the most flattering length for petite frames. Shows enough leg to create the appearance of height without cutting the figure in an unflattering place.
  • Vertical patterns and prints — stripes, small all-over prints, elongated florals — create a vertical visual line that makes the figure look taller.
  • V-necklines — elongate the neck and torso, adding visual height effectively.
  • Monochromatic dresses — one colour from top to hem creates an unbroken vertical line that adds height. One of the most effective height-adding styling tricks.
  • Empire waist dresses — the high waistline makes the legs look longer proportionally.

What to avoid

  • Floor-length maxi dresses
  • Wide horizontal stripes
  • Very voluminous tiers
  • Mid-calf lengths

Wear what makes you feel good.

Body type guides are tools — not rules. They give you a starting point, a framework for understanding what tends to work and why. But the most important thing a dress can do is make you feel comfortable, confident, and like yourself.

If a silhouette that is supposedly wrong for your body type makes you feel great — wear it. Fashion rules exist to be understood and then set aside when they do not serve you.

At Lataree, we design dresses for real Indian women — in real sizes, with real bodies, living real lives. Every silhouette is selected for wearability across different body types. Every fabric is chosen for comfort rather than photography.
